Are You As Carefree as a Child?

The source of our happiness does not lie outside us. It lies within. We are as happy as we make up our minds to be. Just ask any child.
“Suffer the little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for to such belongeth the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 19: 13-15)

Children are free spirits, unburdened by the cares of this world. They live in the moment, flitting from one thing after another, finding joy in whatever their brief attention span happens to light upon. To a child, the most prosaic objects are sources of mind-boggling wonder. But no single thing holds their attention for long because the source of their happiness lies within them, not outside. It’s their unfettered imaginations.

We adults, on the other hand, have lengthy attention spans. We tend to fixate on people and things that we think will bring us happiness at some future time. We form attachments to these objects of our desire and those attachments weigh us down. They make it difficult to free our imaginations and develop the insight needed to appreciate all the wonders and gifts that lie all about us at this very moment. The source of our happiness lies within. We are as happy as we make up our mind to be. Just ask any child.
