Man With Dropsy Cured

“Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?” (Luke 14: 1-6)

In the biblical era, the term “dropsy” referred to someone who was bloated, suffering from an accumulation of fluids in the face, chest cavity, abdomen, arms or legs. Today the condition is known as “edema.” The root cause can vary but edema is often due to congestive heart failure.

The ancients believed dropsy was a sign of greed because the sufferer continued to drink, even though filled with water to the point of dying.

The Pharisees misjudged the man with dropsy, and worse, they failed to see that they were actually the greedy ones. They had a bloated sense of self-importance and an an insatiable thirst for praise and honor.

Parable of the Rich Fool
