Jesus took the scribes and Pharisees to task because they abused the power they enjoyed as a result of being able to read and write at a time when most people were illiterate. The average Jew spoke Aramaic at home and Greek in business dealings, but could not read the ancient Hebrew prayers and scrolls in the synagogue. Wide-spread illiteracy coupled with the prevalence of three languages led to abuses in how precepts of the faith were interpreted by the scribes and Pharisees.
