Pilate Misjudges Jesus
04/02/10 06:19
By His example, He showed us the best way to respond to our accusers is to remain dignified and calm, patiently marshaling our facts and asserting our innocence. Most importantly, He demonstrated that we have to make good on our claims. Read More...

A Matter of Justice

“For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged...” (Matthew 7: 1-5)
Knowing our tendency to make errors in judgment, Jesus urged His followers to be cautious in finding fault with others. He flat out told the Pharisees not to judge others when they were guilty of the same offenses. He came down hard on their hypocrisy. He made a sharp distinction between their critical, judgmental thinking and the cautious discernment He expected His followers to use.
In John 7: 24, Jesus said, “Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” Read More...

An Eye for an Eye?

“. . . whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Matthew 5: 38-42)
It would be easy to pass off Jesus' sermon as a figure of speech, except for one thing - - Christ lived the message. He not only prayed for His persecutors, He died for them. In Christ, we have a perfect example of how the scales of justice must balance righteousness and mercy.

Jesus Warns of Trials

“ . . . he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.” (Matthew 10: 17-22)
The syndicated courtroom TV show, “Judge Judy,” is one of the most popular and enduring programs on television, at its peak making Judge Judith Sheindlin the highest-paid woman in television history. We are fascinated with the workings of our judicial system and sit in rapt attention as the cameras take us inside the courtroom where Judge Judy takes an inquisitorial role, grilling plaintiffs and defendants, examining the evidence and rendering her verdict in a matter of minutes.
But what they don’t tell you is that the producers of the show pay the award for every judgment from a fund reserved for each case. The remainder of the fund is split between the plaintiff and defendant. At least from a monetary standpoint, there are no losers in Judge Judy’s courtroom.
In Jesus’ time, justice was not so even handed. Those found guilty of being a Christian could pay the ultimate price. Read More...

Why Me, Lord? The Parable of the Unjust Judge
11/18/08 07:22
“There was a judge in a certain city, who feared not God, nor regarded man.” (Luke 18: 1-8)
Life is unfair. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our judicial system. An eyewitness fingers the wrong man. A class action lawsuit enriches the attorneys instead of the victims. The rich and famous get a free pass from star-struck juries. A poor widow gets her case dismissed without a hearing. It happens all the time.
The playing field isn’t level. It’s true in the courtroom, the sports arena, the marketplace and in every aspect of life - - like it or not, some people are smarter, more talented, richer and just plain luckier than the rest of us. Nowhere is it written that life must be fair, least of all in the Bible. Read More...
