Jesus Said 'Lighten Up'

The Bible tells us that we need leisure time to achieve proper balance in our lives. God Himself rested on the seventh day and commanded us to set aside the Sabbath for holy leisure. He did so for our benefit. Long, leisurely Sunday afternoons surrounded by family and friends and time spent in church reflecting on the goodness of the Lord, are of great value precisely because they are so counter-cultural. The Enemy Within

“. . . I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you. . .” (Matthew 5: 43-48)

We seem to have forgotten one of the most important lessons of the Cold War: it ended without a single shot being fired while millions world-wide prayed for peace. There can be no more dramatic example of what can happen when we follow Jesus’ dictum to pray for our enemies.

The Spirit of Peace

". . . Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you." (John 20: 19-23)

The Holy Spirit is mentioned only 14 times in the Bible, but His presence is felt on every inspiring page. Each time we open the Good Book, we encounter another example of the Spirit at work. The gifts of the Spirit - - such as peace - - are waiting to be discovered in sacred scripture, ready to be applied to our daily lives.

In today’s reading from the Book of John, we witness a pivotal moment in history when Christ revealed to us the relationship between the Spirit of peace and forgiveness.
