The First Must Be Last

“He sat down, and called the twelve; and he saith unto them, If any man would be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.” (Mark 9: 30-37)

"This award touches my heart and the very depth of my soul because of who the award is from and those who will benefit. The humility I feel is staggering, and I know it will stay with me for the rest of my life." (Jerry Lewis, while accepting an Oscar for his humanitarian work.)

To my mind, the biggest winner at the Academy Awards was Jerry Lewis. His lifetime achievement award highlighted the importance of using our talents in humble service to others. In essence, his acceptance speech echoed the spiritual lesson taught by Jesus in Mark 9: 30-37.

Servanthood

“When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’” (Luke 17: 7-10)

Jesus called His disciples to a life of dutiful service. The challenge we face is to serve the needs of others without acting superior to them and lording it over them. As servants, we are expected to enter into community with those we serve, befriending them and helping them, even as they help us to discover something about our selves. Christian service is meant to be an exchange of grace.
