Since 9/11 there has been a huge increase in the number of communities hunkered down behind electronic gates, stonewalls and security guard posts. About 40% of the new homes in California are behind walls; and in Florida, where many homes are owned by part-time snowbirds and sit empty much of the year, gated communities dot the landscape.
