In today's Gospel, Jesus confirmed Peter's role as leader of His church, despite the fact that Peter had denied Him three times.

In a sense, this reading illustrates the importance and the power of forgiveness. The gracious response of Jesus to Peter’s disloyalty reminds us that no word, no deed, no mistake is hopelessly beyond forgiveness. But Jesus did more than forgive; He set and example for us when He said, "Follow me."

The Lord expects us to follow His example and be just as quick to forgive the brash, bold, outspoken people who belittle us, dismiss us, back stab and betray and us.

Forgiveness is healing. It mends broken relationships and looks beyond our differences to find common ground at the foot of the cross.
