Celebrating Valentine's Day Every Day

I'm all in favor of celebrating Valentine's Day. Romantic love is a great blessing in any marriage and it is important to keep the flame of love alive. But, Valentine's Day comes once a year and there issimply more to love than a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates and an occasional Hallmark greeting card. It seems to me the key is to find little, every day acts that show you love, honor and respect your spouse.

So, with a quick nod to Cupid, here is a list of some no-cost ways to make every day Valentine's Day – ways that my spouse of nearly five decades tells me are very romantic. I'd be interested in hearing your ideas, too.

• Getting up with a colicky baby in the middle of the night
• Changing diapers
• Helping the kids with their homework
• Taking out the garbage, washing the dishes, folding and putting away the laundry
• Vacuuming the carpet
• Washing the kitchen floor
• Driving carpool
• Coaching Little League sports
• Attending dance recitals
• Giving back or foot massage after a long day
• Managing the family finances prudently

One of my favorite Valentine gifts is a simple mason jar tied with a colorful ribbon and filled with small slips of paper that contain the household chores listed above. But, just to be on the safe side, be sure to add a box of chocolates or flowers when you present the mason jar to your spouse.
